Aventura Dentist Discusses the Possibility: Are Kids that Are Exposed to Second Hand Smoke More Likely to Get More Cavities

It sounds crazy, but it is certainly possible. Children are extremely vulnerable to the ill effects of secondhand smoke.Researchers have discovered one more reason to not smoke, especially around kids: A recent study found that children exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke had double the risk of getting cavities.

The study looked at the health records of nearly 77,000 Japanese children, ranging from newborns to 3-year-olds. The researchers found that children exposed to tobacco smoke at 4 months old had almost twice the risk of getting cavities in their baby teeth.
Exposure to secondhand smoke can be measured by the level of cotinine in the body. Cotinine is a by-product of nicotine, which is found in tobacco. Children who live in homes where smoking is allowed have higher cotinine levels than children who live in smoke-free homes. The researchers also found that children who lived with family members who smoked had significantly more decayed, missing, or filled teeth.

Scientists also found differences in the oral health practices of children exposed to secondhand smoke compared with children who were not. For instance, the kids exposed to tobacco smoke were less likely to regularly brush their teeth. They were also more likely to drink juice, which can decay teeth.

Secondhand smoke affects children’s teeth

Please remember that with studies like this that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, and the study’s authors even concluded that it is impossible to determine whether secondhand smoke exposure caused the increase in cavities.

However, there is plenty of research that has linked secondhand smoke exposure to getting cavities in baby and permanent teeth. And when an estimated 40% of children around the world are exposed to secondhand smoke, it would be unwise to not consider the risks of smoking around kids.

For example, when children are exposed to secondhand smoke, they have less of an antibody called IgA in their saliva and more sialic acid levels. IgA helps protect children and adults from cavities, whereas sialic acid leads to plaque and cavities.

Secondhand smoke can lead to oral health (and overall health) problems by also causing
·    oral inflammation, decrease in vitamin C levels, and dysfunction of the immune system

No amount of secondhand smoke is safe for children. If you smoke, speak with your doctor or dentist about the best way for you to quit. It’s important for your health and the health of your children.

Aventura Dentist Gives Great Tips for Healthier Looking Lips

Aventura Dentist

You see them in just about every Hollywood movie. Yes, beautiful, soft lips. They are desired by women everywhere and pursued by men. You see them everywhere, featured on magazine covers, in lipstick ads, billboards, online. Now you can have them, too? Here are some ways to plump up, beautify, and protect your lips.

READ PRODUCT LABELS
Can't get enough lip balm? If so, check the ingredients you’re putting on your lips. To protect from sun damage, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher. "Avoid parabens and fragrance, which can be irritating," says Ranella Hirsch, MD, a Boston dermatologist. Also, if you tend to get chapped lips, you may need to avoid camphor and menthol, super-aromatic ingredients that can dry your lips. Instead, look for ingredients that help lips hold on to moisture. These include glycerin, mineral oil, aloe, lactic acid, and sorbitol. Lanolin and beeswax both soften lips instantly. However, beeswax does not penetrate the surface of the lip.

SKIP THE ARTIFICIAL STUFF
Skip lip balms with artificial flavors and sweeteners; they can cause an allergic reaction and often dry lips more.

AVOID LICKING YOUR LIPS TOO MUCH
Licking your lips feels great. It cools them down -- but it also makes your problem much worse. Your saliva evaporates quickly, leaving them drier than before, and the enzymes that help your saliva clean your mouth and digest food are much too harsh for your lips.

EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE
Did you know that your lips can benefit from this treatment, too? Apply a dab of sugar and honey (it helps the sugar stick) to your lips and rub gently, using small circular motions.
"Turning over those epidermal cells can help stimulate new collagen, which somewhat slows down the aging process of the lips," says Neil Sadick, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. Finish by wiping your mouth with a damp cloth and applying lip balm.

AVOID OPEN MOUTH BREATHING
Avoid breathing with an open mouth. It's bad, and not just because it looks uncouth. Think of all the air being sucked and blown constantly over your poor lips as you gasp and pant, sapping moisture with every breath. Inhaling and exhaling through your nose will stop that harmful, desert-dry airflow.

Our mouths need just as much care as the rest of our skin -- if not more. Your lips are dependent on a steady intake of vitamins and minerals, so stick to healthy, nutrient-dense foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Vitamins B and E are especially important for healthy lips and skin.
