What is a Dental Sealant and Do I Really Need It?

What is a Dental Sealant?
miami dentist and dental sealants
Dental Sealants keep your teeth healthy

I'm sure you've heard people say that their dentist sealed their teeth to help prevent cavities, but what does that mean? Chances are they are probably talking about a dental sealant. A dental sealant is a clear or white, liquid-plastic material put on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of teeth and protects them from tooth decay and cavities. Although children and teens usually use sealants, adults can use them, too.

Applying a dental sealant is a relatively simple procedure. To put in a sealant, your dentist or dental hygienist will place a cotton roll around your teeth to absorb saliva and prevent moisture from getting on the teeth. A sheet of rubber (rubber dam) may be used to isolate the teeth. Then the dentist will apply the solution that will glue the sealant to the tooth. After about a minute, he or she will rinse off the excess glue, dry your teeth, and put on the sealant.

One type of sealant hardens very quickly through the use of a bright light. The other hardens more gradually. Sealants may wear down over a period of years. Your dentist should check them regularly and reapply them if needed. Overall, dental sealants are a good way to ensure your teeth are protected from decay and cavities.

Miami Dentist Gives A Great Tip for Taking Care of your Teeth on the Go This Summer

Take Care of your Teeth on the Go This Summer

Looking after our oral health on the go can sometimes be difficult, especially during the summer months with frequent travel or that summer chocolatey mid-afternoon snack to get you through to dinner time. It all has an impact on your teeth.

Yes we all may brush our teeth for two minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste (in a perfect world), but between the first and last brush our teeth can come under a constant attack if we don't not give our teeth time to recover.  Our teeth are at risk of acid attack after we eat and drink anything, especially if what we consume has sugar in it. This acid is produced by plaque bacteria, and the sugars in our food and drink, which slowly dissolves the enamel and dentine of the tooth leading to cavities forming.

Solution. Try some sugar-free gum. New evidence has shown that incorporating sugar-free gum into our on the go lifestyles can benefit our oral health. Although not a replacement for brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, chewing after eating or drinking can help our teeth recover quicker and keep your mouth healthy.

How does Sugar-free gum help your oral health?

The process of chewing sugar-free gum helps the mouth to produce more saliva - the mouth's natural defense against acid; it usually takes our saliva about an hour to replace the minerals that the enamel has lost after eating. But chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after eating or drinking increases the flow of saliva, and helps replace the minerals more quickly. Chewing sugar-free gum during the day can be effective in neutralizing harmful plaque acids and reducing the risk of decay.

Don’t forget to throw a pack of sugar-free gum in your travel bag. Your teeth will thank you.

Aventura Dentist Discusses the Possibility: Are Kids that Are Exposed to Second Hand Smoke More Likely to Get More Cavities

It sounds crazy, but it is certainly possible. Children are extremely vulnerable to the ill effects of secondhand smoke.Researchers have discovered one more reason to not smoke, especially around kids: A recent study found that children exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke had double the risk of getting cavities.

The study looked at the health records of nearly 77,000 Japanese children, ranging from newborns to 3-year-olds. The researchers found that children exposed to tobacco smoke at 4 months old had almost twice the risk of getting cavities in their baby teeth.
Exposure to secondhand smoke can be measured by the level of cotinine in the body. Cotinine is a by-product of nicotine, which is found in tobacco. Children who live in homes where smoking is allowed have higher cotinine levels than children who live in smoke-free homes. The researchers also found that children who lived with family members who smoked had significantly more decayed, missing, or filled teeth.

Scientists also found differences in the oral health practices of children exposed to secondhand smoke compared with children who were not. For instance, the kids exposed to tobacco smoke were less likely to regularly brush their teeth. They were also more likely to drink juice, which can decay teeth.

Secondhand smoke affects children’s teeth

Please remember that with studies like this that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, and the study’s authors even concluded that it is impossible to determine whether secondhand smoke exposure caused the increase in cavities.

However, there is plenty of research that has linked secondhand smoke exposure to getting cavities in baby and permanent teeth. And when an estimated 40% of children around the world are exposed to secondhand smoke, it would be unwise to not consider the risks of smoking around kids.

For example, when children are exposed to secondhand smoke, they have less of an antibody called IgA in their saliva and more sialic acid levels. IgA helps protect children and adults from cavities, whereas sialic acid leads to plaque and cavities.

Secondhand smoke can lead to oral health (and overall health) problems by also causing
·    oral inflammation, decrease in vitamin C levels, and dysfunction of the immune system

No amount of secondhand smoke is safe for children. If you smoke, speak with your doctor or dentist about the best way for you to quit. It’s important for your health and the health of your children.
