7 Ways to Make Your Smile Sparkle and Stand Out According to North Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll

miami prosthodontistFollow these seven tricks to make you smile brighter and whiter.

Your smile is probably the first thing people see when they meet you. What kind of message does your smile send? According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), a smile tainted by damaged or yellow teeth tends to make you appear older. Fortunately, there are many ways to achieve a beautiful, white smile that can make you appear to be younger than you are. A smile that seems brighter without all the hard work.

1. Focus on Flossing
Miami Beach Cosmetic Dentist, Dr. Mereos recommends brushing your teeth after every meal, even packing a toothbrush for an “after lunch” work brush. However, the real trick is in the flossing. Flossing every day will also go a long way in making your smile look great. Even the best toothbrushes and mouthwash can’t reach every crevice between your teeth, proper flossing is a sure way to prevent bacteria and plaque buildup in your mouth.

2. Boost Calcium and Vitamin C Intake
Since a healthy mouth and white smile are so closely correlated, maintaining strong teeth is another way to keep your smile looking bright. Eating a balanced diet filled with certain teeth-fortifying nutrients will help fend off oral health problems that can detract from a pretty smile, such as tooth decay, erosion, and periodontal disease. Calcium is needed to grow and develop both baby and adult teeth and even strengthens your jawbone. If you’re looking for some of the best foods to maintain a strong, healthy bite, go for calcium-rich low-fat and fat-free milk, cheeses, cruciferous vegetables (green leafy vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower), and calcium-fortified juices, breakfast cereals, breads, or soy products.

Vitamin C is another nutrient that helps maintain strong teeth by working as an antioxidant to repair tissue and prevent disease-causing bacteria from penetrating the gums, so those cruciferous veggies — particularly broccoli — will do double duty, since they’re rich in both calcium and vitamin C.
In addition, any crunchy fruits and veggies, like apples and carrots, are good for your teeth, since chewing them increases levels of saliva, which can help protect the teeth from plaque-causing bacteria by breaking down food caught between teeth. Similarly, drinking plenty of water also helps rid your mouth of such bacteria (especially after meals) while also helping to prevent stains and protect your teeth from the harmful effects of acidic foods and beverages, according to the AACD. Chewing sugarless gum is another simple way to trigger saliva — a natural way to fight acid and keep your teeth looking bright.

3. Food and Drinks Can Do Harm
Avoid sodas — even diet sodas can have negative effects on your teeth. Sugary foods, especially hard, sticky, or gummy candies. Acidic foods, like citrus, may appear healthy but aren’t particularly good for your teeth.  These types of food can weaken tooth enamel and create an environment for cavity-causing bacteria to thrive. This can ultimately cause tooth problems and discoloration that appears as bright white spots on the teeth.

Other threats to your white smile are: Red wine, coffee, and tea.  They are the worst offenders for white teeth.  Refraining from tobacco use is a huge step in the right direction as well, since it’s a major tooth-staining culprit.

4. Try Professional Tooth Whitening or Bleaching
Teeth whitening by a skilled dentist is a faster and more effective way to get a white smile than over-the-counter products. Professional chairside bleaching treatments like Zoom! or BriteSmile use a much higher concentration of whitening ingredients than OTC whiteners and incorporate laser technology that is thought to penetrate teeth and facilitate a deeper whitening effect — and usually only take about one hour.

5. Choose a DIY Whitener
An over-the-counter tooth whitening kit is better than no tooth whitener at all. Choose wisely as these do not have the same concentration or fast effect as the in-office treatments.

6. Use Makeup to Your Advantage
If you’re looking for an even faster solution than an over-the-counter whitening kit can offer, try a new makeup routine to get a whiter smile on the go. Wear a bright lipstick that will draw attention to your smile. Also a tanned look will make your teeth appear shades whiter.

7. Consider Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are a simple way to enhance your smile with minimal amount of work at the dentist. Dental Veneers are the secret of many movie stars today.

North Miami Dentist Discusses Ways to Help Children Maintain aHealthy Smile This Halloween

North Miami Dentist
halloween tips from dentist

Halloween is  here and as parents know, this means candy and more candy. For most children means bags of free candy and a chance to build a stockpile of sweets for the winter. No surprise, Halloween can also present parents with a variety of health and safety challenges. Below are a few ways you can help your children maintain their dental health during Halloween and year-round.

Time It Right
Eat Halloween candy (and other sugary foods) with meals or shortly after mealtime. Saliva production increases during meals and helps cancel out acids produced by bacteria in your mouth and helps rinse away food particles.

Choose Candy Carefully

Avoid hard candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. Aside from how often you snack, the length of time sugary food is in your mouth plays a role in tooth decay. Unless it is a sugar-free product, candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay.

Avoid Sticky Situations

Sticky candies cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like taffy and gummy bears, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.

Drink More Water

Drinking fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay. If you choose bottled water, look for kinds that are fluoridated.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Your body is like a complex machine. The foods you choose as fuel and how often you "fill up" affect your general health and that of your teeth and gums.

Stay Away from Sugary Beverages

This includes soda, sports drinks and flavored waters. When teeth come in frequent contact with beverages that contain sugar, the risk of tooth decay is increased.

Brush Twice a Day

Brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. Remember, replace your toothbrush every three or four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed. A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

We hope you and your family have a Happy and very healthy Halloween!!!

North Miami Prosthodontist Answers Some of the Most Commonly Asked Questions about Dental Implants

If you have lost a tooth, it is likely that one of your options is to replace it with a dental implant. Dental implants are the most natural replacement for a missing tooth. Before you decide a course of action, you should consider asking your dentist some simple questions:

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium metal replacement for a root of a tooth that is surgically implanted in the jawbone. Though there's some evidence that ancient people may have tried to create dental implants from pieces of shell, nothing beats modern titanium. In the 1960's, it was discovered that bone will grow so close to a titanium implant that bone and implant essentially become one.

As the body heals for approximately two to six months after the surgery, the bone around the implant fuses to the implant through a process called osseointegration. After the healing phase is complete, the implants are used to anchor crowns, bridges, or dentures.

What Is the Dental Implant Process Like?

The process should begin with a thorough evaluation of the patient's medical and dental history, and a full clinical examination of the entire mouth and missing tooth area. The clinical exam should also include specific X-rays.

After assessing the patient, a comprehensive treatment plan can be devised. From that point, implants are surgically placed in the jawbone under local anesthesia. The length of the healing time is based on the quality and quantity of bone, as well as the type of implant placed. After adequate healing is allowed to occur, the implant can be used to support a crown, bridge, or denture.

How Many Dental Implants Should Be Placed?

This is a question that should be determined during the treatment plan. A good rule-of thumb is to place one implant for each tooth replaced. Other decisive factors for the number of implants needed for success is the quality and quantity of the patient's bone. Equally as important are the existing anatomy of the bone and the financial resources of the patient.

Placing enough implants to restore teeth is vitally important to the long-term success of the restoration. Simply stated, the most costly mistake is to have an implant fail because not enough implants are placed to support the teeth. If the number of implants is limited due to financial constraints of the patient, then the implant treatment should be avoided or the type of restoration must be altered.

Who Should You See about Getting Dental Implants?

When getting dental implants, you should select a dentist or dental team with in-depth knowledge and prior experience with all aspects of the treatment. It is important to know that implant treatment consists of two components: a surgical phase and a restorative phase.

Traditionally, a dental surgeon, like an oral surgeon or a periodontist, performs the surgical component. A general dentist, or prosthodontist and laboratory technician performs the restorative component. However, as implant dentistry has become more sophisticated, sometimes a dentist who specializes in restorative dentistry conducts the entire procedure.

Are There Different Types of Dental Implants?

Yes, several types are available. The American Dental Association considers both the endosteal and the subperiosteal implants to be acceptable. An important factor for
selection is to determine whether your jawbone can adequately support the implant.

Most dental implants placed today are endosteal root form fixtures (similar to a manmade tooth root). More knowledgeable patients have more input to offer their dentists about their implant treatment and have better chances of a successful treatment outcome.

North Miami dentist discusses the benefits of Replacing Black and Unsightly Silver Fillings

North Miami dentist discusses the benefits of Replacing Black and Unsightly Silver
Miami prosthodontist
Fillings

As we all know, tooth decay can lead to cavities. For over 100 years, dentists have
been using silver-mercury amalgam fillings to restore decayed or broken teeth. (In fact,
the Chinese first used silver fillings in the 7th century.) Historically, the only other
alternative was gold, and that was always too expensive for most folks.

These silver fillings are called amalgams. Amalgam fills the space where the decay in
the tooth has been removed. However, over time, the amalgam can corrode and leak.
Teeth can crack because of the expansion of the amalgam. This blackens the silver,
and many times the tooth. This can be seen when a patient opens his or her mouth, and
it is often a source of embarrassment for the patient.

Now, we have many ways to provide tooth-colored restorations. We can use adhesives
to bond tooth parts that look and act like teeth. We can provide a bright, healthy and
strong smile with these exciting new techniques in adhesion dentistry.

Composite fillings are a new and economical way to restore teeth while keeping patients' smiles looking great. They are made of a porcelain-like material that actually bonds to the tooth for a tight seal. They are strong and stain-resistant, and they are color-matched to the natural tooth, making them appear invisible.

Tooth-colored resin fillings are made of glass particles in a plastic matrix. The doctor
bonds the putty-like material to the tooth with a high-intensity light. This hardens the
material and allows it to be shaped and polished for immediate use.

Once completed, the tooth has a natural appearance and is actually stronger than
before due to the strength of the adhesive agent used to bond the resin to the tooth.
Resin restorations not only look better, but they are stronger and last longer than the old
silver-amalgam fillings.

Composite fillings also lack the sensitivity that is often associated with silver amalgam
fillings. They are especially suited for smaller cavities and for patients who may be
allergic to metal fillings.

If you have any questions about the benefits of replacing silver amalgam fillings with
invisible composite fillings, please don't hesitate to call our office to schedule an appointment.
