Great Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween

North Miami Dentist

Halloween is here! For most children it means bags of free candy and a chance to build a stash of sweets for the winter. However, Halloween can also present parents with a variety of health and safety challenges. Eat that candy on Halloween but it’s important to have a plan.

How can help your family stay healthy on Halloween?

Choose Candy Carefully

Avoid hard candy, sour candy and other sweets that stay in your mouth for a long time. Aside from how often you snack, the length of time sugary food is in your mouth plays a role in tooth decay. Unless it is a sugar-free product, candies that stay in the mouth for a long period of time subject teeth to an increased risk for tooth decay. The longer the sweet stays in contact with your teeth, the worst it is for your teeth!

Avoid Sticky Situations

Sticky candies cling to your teeth. The stickier candies, like taffy and gummy bears, take longer to get washed away by saliva, increasing the risk for tooth decay.

Have a Plan

It’s tempting to keep that candy around, but your teeth will thank you if you limit your access. A good strategy is to pick your favorite and donate the rest. There are organizations that help you donate candy to troops overseas, like Operation Gratitude. This can be a win-win for all in your family!

Drink More Water

Drinking fluoridated water can help prevent tooth decay. If you choose bottled water, look for kinds that are fluoridated.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

Your body is like a complex machine. The foods you choose as fuel and how often you "fill up" affect your general health and that of your teeth and gums.Follow the above recommendations to avoid dental issues this Halloween. The main thing is to enjoy the time with your family this Halloween and help everyone maintain a healthy smile for life!

Cold and Flu Season: 3 Ways to Care for Your Mouth When You’re Sick

Sooner or later we all catch the flu. It’s inevitable. When you have a cold or the flu, taking care of your body is your top priority—and that includes your mouth. Here are three simple ways to care for your dental health when you’re not feeling well:

1. Stay Hydrated to Avoid Dry Mouth
When you’re sick, you need plenty of fluids for many reasons. One is to prevent dry mouth. Not only is it uncomfortable—dry mouth can also put you at greater risk for tooth decay and cavities. The medications you might be taking for a cold or flu—such as antihistamines, decongestants or pain relievers—can also dry out your mouth, so drink plenty of water and suck on sugarless cough drops, throat lozenges or candies to keep that saliva flowing.

2. Choose Sugar-Free Cough Drops
Read the label before you pick up a bag of cough drops at the drug store. Make sure to avoid ingredients like fructose or corn syrup. Many cough drops contain sugar, and it is almost as bad as sucking on candy. Sugar is the bad guy when it comes to cavities. The longer you keep a sugary cough drop in your mouth, the more time cavity-causing bacteria has to feast on that sugar, which produces the acid that can lead to tooth decay and cavities.

3. Practice Good Hygiene
When you’re sick, you know to cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze. Don’t forget to keep up your dental and toothbrush hygiene as well. According to the CDC, the flu virus can live on moist surfaces for 72 hours. Make sure not share your toothbrush. This can get other people sick. Also, replace your toothbrush after you’ve been sick. Especially if it is more than three months old.

These three tips will help you maintain your dental health even if you are sick. Remember to always brush at least twice per day and floss through colds and the flu. A healthy mouth contributes to a healthy you.

Do you suffer from Bad Breath? It’s More Common than you think. There is Hope…Read on

miami dentist

If you don’t have it, you are lucky. Yes, it’s Bad breath (also known as halitosis or malodor). It can be embarrassing and tough on those around you. Some people don't realize their breath could stop a charging bull. It can even ruin relationships.

Fortunately, this problem is often easy to fix. It takes: Good oral hygiene, regular visits to your dentist, and ruling out any underlying conditions or other factors (such as some medications, diets, and foods) that could cause bad breath.

Do You Have Bad Breath?
Bad breath is often caused by a buildup of bacteria in your mouth that causes inflammation and gives off bad odors or gases that smell like sulfur.

What Causes it?
Studies show that about 80% of bad breath comes from your mouth. Cavities or gum disease can lead to bad breath, as can tonsils that have trapped food particles; cracked fillings, and less-than-clean dentures. There are also several internal medical conditions also can cause bad breath. They include diabetes, liver disease, respiratory tract infections, and chronic bronchitis. You'll want to see your doctor to rule out things like acid reflux, postnasal drip, and other causes of chronic dry mouth (xerostomia).

The main thing to do is keep it clean. Good oral hygiene is key to fighting bad breath. Ideally, you should brush and floss after every meal to help reduce the odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. While a regular toothbrush works well, using an electric toothbrush is better. Good mouthwashes or mouth rinses can help prevent cavities and reduce bacteria-causing plaque and fight bad breath. Stick to an antiseptic or antibacterial rinse that kills bacteria, rather than a cosmetic rinse that just focuses on freshening the breath.

What You Eat Also makes a difference.
Eat a healthy, balanced diet and regular meals. Certain diets -- such as extreme fasting and very low-carb diets -- can give you bad-smelling breath. Consider snacking on raw carrots, celery, or apple slices.

Avoid foods that worsen bad breath like garlic, onions, and some other spicy foods. Chronic garlic users cannot only have chronic bad breath, they also often have body odor.
More Ways to Fix Bad Breath

First Stay hydrated. If you can't brush your teeth after a meal, drinking a lot of water can help speed up the process of cleaning harmful bacteria and debris from between your teeth. Don't drink too much coffee. It may be tasty, but coffee is a tough smell to get off the back of your tongue. Try green tea instead.

Don't smoke or use other tobacco products. Cigarettes, pipes, and snuff can foul your breath.
Cut back on alcohol. Alcohol can lead to a dry mouth. Too much beer, wine, and hard liquor can make your breath reek for up to eight to 10 hours after you finish drinking.
Chew sugarless gum especially after a meal. This can help with saliva flow. Try gum that's 100% xylitol-sweetened can help reduce cavities.

Your Summer Smile May be Just Two Dental Visits Away with Veneers

Are Porcelain Veneers Right for me?
Miami dentist

If you want the perfect smile, then yes! You’ll often hear people say that celebrities have perfect smiles due to dental veneers and this may be the case. Veneers do seem like the best way to replicate picture-perfect teeth, but you must remember that each mouth is different and you need to find out if veneers are the right option for your individual case.

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth. They also provide strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. It is often the material of choice for those looking to make slight position alterations, or to change tooth shape, size, and/or color. The process is fast and easy. They can help close gaps between teeth, and do away with tooth discolorations.

The first step in determining if veneers are the right option for you is to make an appointment with our office to discuss the various treatment options available to you. Communication with our office about what you want corrected is critical for a successful result. Spend time clearly identifying what cosmetic improvements you want to accomplish. Let us know how you want your new teeth to look. Pick the right shape and color for your teeth.

We will most likely begin with a smile analysis to determine what steps are necessary to achieve the smile you desire. Then we can create a mockup of your smile. Finally, we can start the process. Dental porcelain veneers only take two visits to complete and often do not even require anesthesia. If you want to find out more information, call our office today.

Have You Ever Seen an Extreme Dental Makeover?

Cutting-edge dental news from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
prosthodontist
Great outcome thanks to the hard work of  Dr. Katherine Rodriguez, Dr. Raj Gohill, Dr. Lewis Carroll, and Dr. David Carroll.

I'll bet you've seen the makeover reality shows where a regular person is transformed into someone almost unrecognizable. Even if you don't like that sort of show, it can be hard not to get sucked in. We watch as an individual's appearance (and often self-esteem) is dramatically improved. One of the biggest changes to a person’s appearance can be made by changing their smile.

Luckily, cosmetic dentistry can help. We have many of ways to improve - or even remake your smile. Here are some of the most popular (and most effective) cosmetic dental procedures available today:

Veneers - When a dental makeover is instant and dramatic, the most notable changes to the smile were probably the result of veneers. Typically made of porcelain or a composite material, veneers are thin coatings that adhere to your teeth. Veneers can completely transform your smile, resolving discoloration, gaps, teeth of varying lengths and sizes, chips, cracks and more.

Invisalign - The days of clunky metal braces are gone, for the most part at least. Today's key orthodontic solution is Invisalign, a barely-there teeth positioning product. Tooth straightening and repositioning are achieved through a series of clear trays that fit over your teeth. They're removable, comfortable, and practically invisible.

north miami dentist
Teeth Whitening - Chances are you've noticed a recent surge in dental whitening products advertised on television and in magazines. If veneers are either too expensive or too excessive for your style or budget, whitening can restore a bright white smile, peeling back years of stains and abuse. Though you can use over-the counter products to bleach your teeth, the results will be more dramatic and effective if you seek help from a dental professional. You can choose a home bleaching system or a chair-side procedure for instant results. Tooth whitening can quickly and easily knock years off your smile.

Miami Dentist Discusses How Excellent Oral Hygiene Can be Accomplished?

prosthodontistCutting-edge dental news from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
Want a healthy, beautiful smile and great breath. These are the results of having good dental hygiene. Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your teeth, gums, and smile. Healthy teeth enable you to look and feel good, and make it possible for you to eat and speak properly. Good oral health is important to your overall well-being.
Sometimes it’s the small daily routines that have a great payoff in the long run. Daily preventive care, including proper brushing and flossing, will help stop problems before they develop. Prevention is much less painful, expensive, and worrisome than treating conditions that have been allowed to progress and grow into emergencies.
In between regular dental visits, there are simple steps that each you can take to greatly decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems. These include:
  • ·         Flossing daily
  • ·         Brushing thoroughly at least twice a day
  • ·         Eating a well balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals
  • ·         Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste
  • ·         Rinsing with a fluoride mouthrinse if your dentist tells you to
  • ·         Making sure that your children under 12 drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride       supplement if they live in a non-fluoridated area.

Quitting to a Healthy Smile: A great New Year's Resolution by Miami Prosthodontist Dr. Carroll

Great dental tips from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
Miami Dentist resolution

Not another New Year’s resolution! Guess what? Now is the right time to take the plunge and kick old bad habits, especially when the payoff is great – a healthy smile. You already know smoking is bad for your health, so it should be no surprise that cigarettes and chewing tobacco are also harmful to your teeth. Bad breath is only the beginning. There are many other dental reasons to quit smoking, including:

  • stained teeth and tongue
  • dulled sense of taste and smell
  • slow healing after a tooth extraction or other surgery
  • difficulties in correcting cosmetic dental problems
  • gum disease
  • oral cancer

Quitting is the only way to decrease your risk of these and other tobacco-related health problems. The addictive quality of nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco, can make this especially difficult. That’s why it’s important to have a plan and a support network, people to help you stick to your plan. Write down your reasons for quitting. Studies show that writing your goals down multiplies your chances for reaching them. Make quitting smoking one of your goals. Find healthy substitutes. Exercising, chewing gum and keeping yourself occupied can help you quit.

In January 2014, the U.S. marked the 50th anniversary of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health by expanding the list of illnesses associated with smoking. More than 20 million Americans have died because of smoking since the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health was issued in 1964, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Most of those deaths were of adults who smoked, but 2.5 million were of nonsmokers who died because they breathed secondhand smoke—air that was polluted by other people’s cigarette smoke.

Aventura dentistLooking for more inspiration to quit? Think of your family and the negative impact that secondhand smoke can have on them. Look no further that your mirror, if you want a healthy, beautiful smile then quitting is a must!

Miami Dentist - Dr. Carroll - On New Types Of Dental Technology

aventura dentistGreat dental tips from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.

Advancements in dental technology has allowed dentist the ability to provide more efficient and productive dental treatments to patients. The technology helps to make the treatments go by easily for both patients and dentists. Fortunately for patients, the industry continues to grow and change at a constant rate. So, if you need to visit the dentist for an issue that you believe is complicated, schedule a consultation with a dentist, so you will be updated on the latest techniques and technology that is used in dentistry. There are several different procedures that are new to dentistry, and once you learn more about these procedures, you will know which treatment and procedures are best for your needs.
Cosmetic Dentist

Digital X-rays

What Are Digital X-Rays? Although you may be familiar with regular x-rays, you may not know what digital x-rays are. These x-rays produce results more quickly than traditional x-rays. The x-rays image appears within seconds after the x-ray has been given. Dentists also have the ability to adjust the image so that they are able to exam your teeth better. This means that dentists now have the ability to detect an issue or a potential issue much faster. This type of technology is also safer for patients because it releases less radiation than traditional x-rays.
Aventura dentist

Laser Dentistry

Both patients and dentists enjoy laser technology because it is more efficient and less painful than other methods of treatment. This technology can be used to fill cavities, whitening teeth, removing oral tumors and reducing teeth sensitivity. This type of dentistry is not only painless; it is also effective at preventing and removing bacteria growth.

Invisalign- Invisible Braces

Invisalign is a technology that replaces metal and clear braces. This technology helps to make teeth straighter, and eliminates the need for patients to wear unsightly metal braces. This braces alternative can be worn on the teeth and taken off of the teeth as need. The patient does not have to restrict the food that they eat. Invisalign has become one of the most popular types of corrective oral wear because the technology is not obtrusive.
North Miami Dentist

Dental Implants

These implants consist of metal screws that are placed in the gum where teeth are missing. The implants are a wonderful option for patients who want to have a brand new healthy smile. Patients enjoy the natural smile that dental implants provide.

VELScope

VELscope is a light technology where a special light is reflected on a person's teeth and surrounding tissues. This light helps to detect anything that is abnormal within the teeth and surrounding tissues. The light can be used to detect certain health conditions such as oral cancer. Many patients have been treated for oral cancer in the beginning stages because of this technology.

Zoom! Teeth Whitening

Dentist in 33160

Zoom is a technique that is used to whiten the teeth. The technique is faster, and produces longer results. A single Zoom treatment can make your teeth many shades whiter in one single visit.
New dental technology is being continuously developed and release all the time. Use these dental technologies to improve your dental health and get more out of dentistry. Make sure you find a dentist that embraces dental technology and is someone with whom you are comfortable with and can develop an ongoing relationship with. Make sure your dentist is aware of your individual needs. So, don't hold back. The more your dentist knows about you, the better equipped they will be to give you the proper treatment.

Have Bad Breath, It may be a Sign of Deeper Dental Issues

Miami ProsthodontistWhile bad breath might be a symptom of some other disorder, it most likely stems from dental decay and periodontitis. It's more than just socially awkward - it's a serious threat
to your oral health.

Periodontitis is a disease affecting gums and bone that support the teeth, and it is
caused by inadequate brushing and flossing. In this disease, the irritated gums pull
away from the teeth and form pockets between the teeth and the gums. These pockets
fill with bacteria and pus which give off a foul odor.

Patients with bad breath should be referred for a complete dental evaluation. If gum
disease and/or dental decay is diagnosed, it can be treated readily. The patient will no
longer have an infection in his or her mouth, and will no longer have the embarrassment
of bad breath.

There's no need to live with bad breath, and no reason to neglect your dental health. If

you have questions regarding halitosis, please call our office.

Get That Bright Summer Smile, But Be Careful How You Do it!

Miami teeth whiteningGreat dental tips from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.

South Florida is the bright smile capital of the south, and we see our share of patients that want to go at it alone by whitening their teeth at home. Patients often ask our opinion about the best whitening toothpaste or whitening strips at the drugstore, so they can perform the whitening treatment on their own. However, there is no substitute for a professional fast in-office whitening treatment. You may find plenty of products available at the store or on-line. Some of them may actually work, but they will not achieve the amazing results that you can get with a professional in-office whitening treatment.

The problem with these over-the-counter treatments is that they typically come in one size and strength to fit all types of teeth. However, when it comes to dental work, every patient has different needs. The whitening trays and strips found at your local drugstore may provide good results on one patient’s teeth, while providing another with only a partial whitening. This may cause and uneven result. Some teeth appearing perfectly white, while others still showing stains. Sometimes the results are worse than before the treatment.

The whitening products sold in stores are not professional strength. They usually contain a small amount of whitening agent, usually around 3 percent peroxide, which may provide results for patients who have light stains on their teeth, but may not do much for tough teeth stains and discolorations. Most over-the-counter products will provide results one to two shades brighter. The whitening gel our office uses comes in a professional strength only available to dentists, with up to 35 percent peroxide strength. The gel can penetrate the enamel of your teeth, removing stubborn stains that the store-bought kits cannot touch. Our professional treatment can whiten your teeth by up to ten shades in just one visit. It is important to know that results will vary by patient.

Regular teeth whitening products you buy at your local store may help you attain a brighter smile, but you may need to use them for weeks, or even months before you see evident results.  The whitening system we use in our office usually lasts about an hour, and can produce results up to ten shades brighter in that short time.

Call our office today to make an appointment so you can find out what the best options are for your specific case.

Miami Dentist Answers Top Patients Questions: Are Dentures a good option for me?

Miami dental implants
Are dentures a good option?
Are Dentures a good option for me? I often get get this question from my patients. Let's first review
what what dentures are and their positives and negatives! Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile. If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. That’s because dentures make it easier to eat and speak better than you could without teeth—things that people often take for granted.

When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. They can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change much. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile.

Types of dentures:

  • Conventional. This full removable denture is made and placed in your mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which may take several months.
  • Immediate. This removable denture is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. Your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw during a preliminary visit. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period, but may need to have the denture relined or remade after your jaw has healed.
  • Overdenture. Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too.
New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. It is not unusual to experience minor irritation or soreness. You may find that saliva flow temporarily increases. As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems should go away. Follow-up appointments with the dentist are generally needed after a denture is inserted so the fit can be checked and adjusted. If any problem persists, particularly irritation or soreness, be sure to consult your dentist.
Even if you wear full dentures, you still have to practice good dental hygiene. Brush your gums, tongue and roof of your mouth every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque.
The negative aspects of dentures are that they:
  • Are often uncomfortable
  • Require adhesive
  • put pressure on your gums
  • often make you feel old.
  • may have to be adjusted often
  • can cause bone re absorption due to pressure on the gum and underlying structures
The good news is that there are other alternatives. New advances in dentistry allow us to replace one or more missing teeth with dental implants. We can often replace a full arch or a full mouth of teeth with dental implants. The restorations on the dental implants can be non-removable and be highly esthetic. In fact, dental implants con often look better than your natural teeth and require minimal maintenance. Dental implants are a superior restoration option to dentures and partials.

Call our office to find out more about dental implants and to see if you a good candidate.
