Three Healthy Dental Habits for the Holidays

The Holidays are a great time for friends, family, and food! The bad news is that it is easy to neglect your dental health during the holidays. All the extra food, the sweets, the sugary drinks can all add up to dental problems that will put an end to your holiday celebrations. However, there are a few dental health tips that can help to ensure that you have a healthy smile and avoid dental issues these holidays.

The National Confectioners Association says 77% of people include candy in holiday gifts. This means that you will more than likely be receiving candy as a gift this year.

Dental Tip #1: Consider re-gifting the sticky, candy and keeping the chocolate. Chocolate is a better option because it washes off your teeth more easily than stickier sweets like candy canes.

Dental Tip #2: Don’t Open Gifts with Your Teeth. Believe it or not, gift wrapping is a big cause for dental emergencies for the holidays. Don’t use your teeth to try to undo the knots tied with ribbon. Your teeth were made for eating, not to stand in as a pair of scissors. If you do, you could crack a tooth, loosen caps or dental bridges, injure your jaw or accidentally swallow something you shouldn’t. Stop catch yourself and find something or someone to give you a hand instead. It only takes a few seconds, but it can help you avoid pain and time dealing with a dental emergency.

Dental Tip#3: Carol While You Clean Your Teeth. Take advantage of the seasonal music. Using music to time your dental routine can be of great help and fun as well. Try it with the kids and create a holiday playlist of your family’s favorite holiday music for a fun dental care routine.

Put these dental tips to use and create a healthy holiday smile! We wish you a happy holiday season and a very Happy New Year!
