You probably have never heard of Bioclear® and may have questions about this new type of treatment. Here are the answers to some of your most asked Bioclear® questions.

Q: What happens during the Bioclear® procedure?

A: The First step is to remove any trace of biofilm from your teeth. This is done by gently polishing it away with a special cleaning powder and specialized instruments to remove the microscopic sticky layer that accumulates on the surface of the teeth (without damaging the tooth surface). Next, we apply a thin mylar forms that hugs the tooth and provides the mold for a new tooth surface. Then, liquid composite resin is inserted into the form molds. The resin is then hardened using a special ultraviolet light. The tooth is then shaped and polished to have a new beautiful shiny and smooth finish.

Q: Why would I use Bioclear® instead of a crown or bridge?

A: The primary reason to opt for Bioclear® is that the treatment is so much more conservative. It allows for the preservation of more natural tooth structure. For a conventional crown or bridge, we must grind away a large amount of the tooth surface into a peg shape to accommodate the restoration. With Bioclear® there is no need to grind, we build up on the existing tooth structure instead. Another reason to choose Bioclear® is that dental crowns and bridges are more at risk to recurrent decay. Decay starts at the edge of the crown or bridge and can progress underneath it if not addressed right away.

What is Dental Bonding? Dental or tooth bonding is a procedure where your dentist applies a tooth-colored composite resin to one or more of your teeth to repair damage which ultimately "bonds" the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person's smile. If you have a chipped, cracked, or discolored tooth, a cosmetic dental procedure like tooth bonding can give you the confidence to flash those pearly whites again. 

Advantages of Bonding: 

• Bonding usually can be done in one office visit unless several teeth need to be fixed. 
• Compared with veneers and crowns, in bonding less amount of tooth enamel is removed.

Disadvantages of Bonding: 

• Although the material used in dental bonding is somewhat stain-resistant, it does not resist stains as well as crowns or dental veneers. You may develop some discoloration if you smoke or drink a lot of coffee. 

• The composite resin used in bonding isn't nearly as strong as a natural tooth. Biting your fingernails or chewing on ice or pens can chip the material.

1. Brush at least twice a day and flossing daily 

2. Avoid hard food and candy 

3. Do not bite your nails 

4. Avoid coffee, tea, and tobacco for the first two days after the procedure to avoid stains

How Long Does Bonding Material Last? 

The lifespan of bonding materials for the teeth depends on how much bonding was done and your oral habits. Typically, however, bonding material lasts from three years up to about 10 years before needing to be touched up or replaced.

Your teeth usually have a layer of enamel that protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.

Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity to certain things.

There is good news though. Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing your specific sensitivity. Some of these treatments include:

Special desensitizing toothpaste. These special toothpastes usually contain compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve. They may take several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.

Fluoride gel application. This is an in-office procedure that actually strengthens the tooth enamel. The result is reduced the transmission of sensations and less sensitivity.

Dental crown, inlay or bonding. These are dental restorations that correct a flaw or decay. The ultimate result is reduced sensitivity or even no sensitivity at all.

Gum graft. This is a surgical option that replaces gum tissue that has been lost from the root.  This will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.

Root canal. Sometimes when sensitivity is severe and persistent and you have tried other options, a root canal may be the solution. Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain.
