What is Bioclear and how can it help Me Create the Smile I Have Always Wanted?

bioclear

Everyone wants a great looking smile, but very few of us were born with perfect teeth. What if you could get your dream smile quickly, easily, and affordably? Now you can with Bioclear®. Bioclear® is a non-invasive, cosmetic treatment that enhances your smile. Dr. Carroll is one of the few Bioclear® certified dentists in Florida to provide this next generation restorative treatment. Dr. Carroll uses this revolutionary treatment to fill in black triangles left by gum recession or bone loss or as an alternative to dental crowns or dental bridges in order to repair a damaged tooth or several teeth.

You probably have never heard of Bioclear® and may have questions about this new type of treatment. Here are the answers to some of your most asked Bioclear® questions.

Q: What happens during the Bioclear® procedure?

A: The First step is to remove any trace of biofilm from your teeth. This is done by gently polishing it away with a special cleaning powder and specialized instruments to remove the microscopic sticky layer that accumulates on the surface of the teeth (without damaging the tooth surface). Next, we apply a thin mylar forms that hugs the tooth and provides the mold for a new tooth surface. Then, liquid composite resin is inserted into the form molds. The resin is then hardened using a special ultraviolet light. The tooth is then shaped and polished to have a new beautiful shiny and smooth finish.

Q: Why would I use Bioclear® instead of a crown or bridge?

A: The primary reason to opt for Bioclear® is that the treatment is so much more conservative. It allows for the preservation of more natural tooth structure. For a conventional crown or bridge, we must grind away a large amount of the tooth surface into a peg shape to accommodate the restoration. With Bioclear® there is no need to grind, we build up on the existing tooth structure instead. Another reason to choose Bioclear® is that dental crowns and bridges are more at risk to recurrent decay. Decay starts at the edge of the crown or bridge and can progress underneath it if not addressed right away.

Q: Does insurance cover Bioclear® treatment?

A: Since Bioclear® is a relatively new alternative to traditional dentistry, it is more than likely NOT covered by your insurance. For posterior teeth, the cost of Bioclear® is often similar to the out-of-pocket expense with insurance. You can use your dental benefits for other necessary procedures.
How do our patients feel about Bioclear®?

Our patients really love this alternative to more traditional treatments. They particularly love the idea of not having to grind down their teeth. They also love the great results and how fast the treatment is. For more information on Bioclear® call our office today.

Dental Bonding A Non-Invasive Solution for Tooth Repair

dental bondingWhat is Dental Bonding? Dental or tooth bonding is a procedure where your dentist applies a tooth-colored composite resin to one or more of your teeth to repair damage which ultimately "bonds" the material to the tooth to restore or improve person's smile. If you have a chipped, cracked, or discolored tooth, a cosmetic dental procedure like tooth bonding can give you the confidence to flash those pearly whites again.

Advantages of Bonding:
  • Bonding usually can be done in one office visit unless several teeth need to be fixed.
  • Compared with veneers and crowns, in bonding less amount of tooth enamel is removed.
Disadvantages of Bonding:
  • Although the material used in dental bonding is somewhat stain-resistant, it does not resist stains as well as crowns or dental veneers. You may develop some discoloration if you smoke or drink a lot of coffee.
  • The composite resin used in bonding isn't nearly as strong as a natural tooth. Biting your fingernails or chewing on ice or pens can chip the material.

How to care for bonded teeth:
  1. Brush at least twice a day and flossing daily
  1. Avoid hard food and candy
  1. Do not bite your nails
  1. Avoid coffee, tea, and tobacco for the first two days after the procedure to avoid stains
  1. Schedule regular dental cleanings every six months

How Long Does Bonding Material Last?
The lifespan of bonding materials for the teeth depends on how much bonding was done and your oral habits. Typically, however, bonding material lasts from three years up to about 10 years before needing to be touched up or replaced.

Are Your Teeth Sensitive? Miami Dentist Gives Solutions to Eliminate Sensitive Teeth

Is cold water causing you to jump? Maybe hot coffee can sometimes be a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you jump? If you answered yes to any of these, you may suffer from sensitive teeth.

Some of the possible causes for sensitive teeth include:

Tooth decay (cavities)
Fractured teeth
Worn fillings
Gum disease
Worn tooth enamel
Exposed tooth root
Trauma

Your teeth usually have a layer of enamel that protects the crowns of your teeth—the part above the gum. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.

Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity to certain things.
There is good news though. Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing your specific sensitivity. Some of these treatments include:

Special desensitizing toothpaste. These special toothpastes usually contain compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve. They may take several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.

Fluoride gel application. This is an in-office procedure that actually strengthens the tooth enamel. The result is reduced the transmission of sensations and less sensitivity.

Dental crown, inlay or bonding. These are dental restorations that correct a flaw or decay. The ultimate result is reduced sensitivity or even no sensitivity at all.

Gum graft. This is a surgical option that replaces gum tissue that has been lost from the root.  This will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.

Root canal. Sometimes when sensitivity is severe and persistent and you have tried other options, a root canal may be the solution. Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain.

What are Dental Implants and why should I consider them as a Replacement for Missing Teeth?

north miami dentist

Many of your friends probably have them and you don’t even know it. The fact is that dental implants are the closest you can get to healthy, natural looking teeth. The easiest way to think of dental implants is as an artificial tooth root that is similar in shape to a screw. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone, they bond with your natural jaw bone. They become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth, called dental crowns. They can also be used to support dental bridges of three or more teeth or even a full arch of teeth.

Ultimately, dental implants allow you to live the way you want to – confidently eating, smiling, laughing, talking, kissing and enjoying all of your everyday activities without worrying about your teeth coming out or getting loose.

Titanium dental implants have been used successfully for over 30 years. They are the strongest devices available today to support replacement teeth. One of the best things about dental implants is that they allow your new teeth to feel, look and function like your natural teeth.

Try a dental resolution this year!

Did you know that most New Year’s resolutions never make it to the end of January? Why not try something a different type of resolution this year…a dental resolution! Make this New Year the best year for attaining the healthy smile you’ve always wanted. It is easier than you think. The first step is to stop the bad habits, then incorporate good dental habits.

Some of the worst dental habits include:

Nail Biting

  • The habit: This nervous habit can chip teeth and impact your jaw.
  • The solution: Bitter-tasting nail polishes, stress reduction and setting small, realistic goals can help. If certain situations are triggers, hold something to keep your fingers busy.

Brushing Too Hard

  • The habit: Brushing for two minutes twice a day is one of the best habits you can get into. Just make sure you’re not trying too hard. Brushing with a hard toothbrush, or brushing too hard, can damage teeth and irritate gums.
  • The solution: Use a soft toothbrush with the proper pressure. “Don’t think ‘scrub.’  Think ‘massage,’" he says. “Save the hard toothbrush for cleaning the grout in the bathroom tile.”

Grinding and Clenching

  • The habit: Teeth grinding can cause chipping or cracking of the teeth, as well as muscle tenderness or joint pain. You might also feel like you can’t open your mouth wide or chew with pain.
  • The solution: Do relaxation exercises and being aware makes a big difference. A nighttime mouthguard may also help. This way you’ll have less tooth damage, less pain and muscle soreness and actually better sleep.

Once you have done away with the bad habits, incorporate good habits like brushing twice per day for at least two minutes, flossing regularly, and regular dental cleanings three times per year. It’s not difficult, and the best part is that our team is here to help. Call our office to schedule your next dental cleaning and start on your dental resolutions now.
