What is Bioclear and how can it help Me Create the Smile I Have Always Wanted?

bioclear

Everyone wants a great looking smile, but very few of us were born with perfect teeth. What if you could get your dream smile quickly, easily, and affordably? Now you can with Bioclear®. Bioclear® is a non-invasive, cosmetic treatment that enhances your smile. Dr. Carroll is one of the few Bioclear® certified dentists in Florida to provide this next generation restorative treatment. Dr. Carroll uses this revolutionary treatment to fill in black triangles left by gum recession or bone loss or as an alternative to dental crowns or dental bridges in order to repair a damaged tooth or several teeth.

You probably have never heard of Bioclear® and may have questions about this new type of treatment. Here are the answers to some of your most asked Bioclear® questions.

Q: What happens during the Bioclear® procedure?

A: The First step is to remove any trace of biofilm from your teeth. This is done by gently polishing it away with a special cleaning powder and specialized instruments to remove the microscopic sticky layer that accumulates on the surface of the teeth (without damaging the tooth surface). Next, we apply a thin mylar forms that hugs the tooth and provides the mold for a new tooth surface. Then, liquid composite resin is inserted into the form molds. The resin is then hardened using a special ultraviolet light. The tooth is then shaped and polished to have a new beautiful shiny and smooth finish.

Q: Why would I use Bioclear® instead of a crown or bridge?

A: The primary reason to opt for Bioclear® is that the treatment is so much more conservative. It allows for the preservation of more natural tooth structure. For a conventional crown or bridge, we must grind away a large amount of the tooth surface into a peg shape to accommodate the restoration. With Bioclear® there is no need to grind, we build up on the existing tooth structure instead. Another reason to choose Bioclear® is that dental crowns and bridges are more at risk to recurrent decay. Decay starts at the edge of the crown or bridge and can progress underneath it if not addressed right away.

Q: Does insurance cover Bioclear® treatment?

A: Since Bioclear® is a relatively new alternative to traditional dentistry, it is more than likely NOT covered by your insurance. For posterior teeth, the cost of Bioclear® is often similar to the out-of-pocket expense with insurance. You can use your dental benefits for other necessary procedures.
How do our patients feel about Bioclear®?

Our patients really love this alternative to more traditional treatments. They particularly love the idea of not having to grind down their teeth. They also love the great results and how fast the treatment is. For more information on Bioclear® call our office today.

Your Summer Smile May be Just Two Dental Visits Away with Veneers

Are Porcelain Veneers Right for me?
Miami dentist

If you want the perfect smile, then yes! You’ll often hear people say that celebrities have perfect smiles due to dental veneers and this may be the case. Veneers do seem like the best way to replicate picture-perfect teeth, but you must remember that each mouth is different and you need to find out if veneers are the right option for your individual case.

Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain used to recreate the natural look of teeth. They also provide strength and resilience comparable to natural tooth enamel. It is often the material of choice for those looking to make slight position alterations, or to change tooth shape, size, and/or color. The process is fast and easy. They can help close gaps between teeth, and do away with tooth discolorations.

The first step in determining if veneers are the right option for you is to make an appointment with our office to discuss the various treatment options available to you. Communication with our office about what you want corrected is critical for a successful result. Spend time clearly identifying what cosmetic improvements you want to accomplish. Let us know how you want your new teeth to look. Pick the right shape and color for your teeth.

We will most likely begin with a smile analysis to determine what steps are necessary to achieve the smile you desire. Then we can create a mockup of your smile. Finally, we can start the process. Dental porcelain veneers only take two visits to complete and often do not even require anesthesia. If you want to find out more information, call our office today.

Call our office today to make an appointment so you can find out what the best options are for your specific case.

Have You Ever Seen an Extreme Dental Makeover?

Cutting-edge dental news from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
prosthodontist
Great outcome thanks to the hard work of  Dr. Katherine Rodriguez, Dr. Raj Gohill, Dr. Lewis Carroll, and Dr. David Carroll.

I'll bet you've seen the makeover reality shows where a regular person is transformed into someone almost unrecognizable. Even if you don't like that sort of show, it can be hard not to get sucked in. We watch as an individual's appearance (and often self-esteem) is dramatically improved. One of the biggest changes to a person’s appearance can be made by changing their smile.

Luckily, cosmetic dentistry can help. We have many of ways to improve - or even remake your smile. Here are some of the most popular (and most effective) cosmetic dental procedures available today:

Veneers - When a dental makeover is instant and dramatic, the most notable changes to the smile were probably the result of veneers. Typically made of porcelain or a composite material, veneers are thin coatings that adhere to your teeth. Veneers can completely transform your smile, resolving discoloration, gaps, teeth of varying lengths and sizes, chips, cracks and more.

Invisalign - The days of clunky metal braces are gone, for the most part at least. Today's key orthodontic solution is Invisalign, a barely-there teeth positioning product. Tooth straightening and repositioning are achieved through a series of clear trays that fit over your teeth. They're removable, comfortable, and practically invisible.

north miami dentist
Teeth Whitening - Chances are you've noticed a recent surge in dental whitening products advertised on television and in magazines. If veneers are either too expensive or too excessive for your style or budget, whitening can restore a bright white smile, peeling back years of stains and abuse. Though you can use over-the counter products to bleach your teeth, the results will be more dramatic and effective if you seek help from a dental professional. You can choose a home bleaching system or a chair-side procedure for instant results. Tooth whitening can quickly and easily knock years off your smile.

Call our office today to make an appointment so you can find out what the best options are for your specific case.

Is There A Vaccine Against Cavities?

Cutting-edge dental news from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
miami dentist

Could Dental Cavities Be a Thing of the Past? Dental cavities are a global epidemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) among industrialized nations, 60 to 90 percent of school children and most adults have cavities. Here in the United States, dental caries, the disease which leads to cavities, is the most common childhood disease, nearly 5 times more common than asthma. Fortunately, the latest dental research shows help may be on the way. Researchers at The Forsyth Institute have made significant advances in research to develop a vaccine against cavities. The research team has discovered key molecules that can stimulate a human immune response attack cavities at their source.

You are still a few years away from seeing a vaccine on the market, but research is moving fast. The vaccine may inhibit the enzyme that allows bacteria to accumulate on your teeth, making dental cavities a thing of the past. Bad news for adults: Since bacteria have already begun to accumulate on your teeth, chances are the vaccine would have little impact on your oral health as an adult. However, in the future if children are vaccinated around the age of 1, it could give them cavity-free future. Around this age their immune systems are strong enough handle the vaccine, yet the probability that bacteria have begun to accumulate is low.

While a vaccine against dental cavities could reduce the number of cavities for future generations, it would not replace proper dental care, such as regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups and cleanings.

Quitting to a Healthy Smile: A great New Year's Resolution by Miami Prosthodontist Dr. Carroll

Great dental tips from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
Miami Dentist resolution

Not another New Year’s resolution! Guess what? Now is the right time to take the plunge and kick old bad habits, especially when the payoff is great – a healthy smile. You already know smoking is bad for your health, so it should be no surprise that cigarettes and chewing tobacco are also harmful to your teeth. Bad breath is only the beginning. There are many other dental reasons to quit smoking, including:

  • stained teeth and tongue
  • dulled sense of taste and smell
  • slow healing after a tooth extraction or other surgery
  • difficulties in correcting cosmetic dental problems
  • gum disease
  • oral cancer

Quitting is the only way to decrease your risk of these and other tobacco-related health problems. The addictive quality of nicotine, which is found in cigarettes, cigars and chewing tobacco, can make this especially difficult. That’s why it’s important to have a plan and a support network, people to help you stick to your plan. Write down your reasons for quitting. Studies show that writing your goals down multiplies your chances for reaching them. Make quitting smoking one of your goals. Find healthy substitutes. Exercising, chewing gum and keeping yourself occupied can help you quit.

In January 2014, the U.S. marked the 50th anniversary of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health by expanding the list of illnesses associated with smoking. More than 20 million Americans have died because of smoking since the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health was issued in 1964, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Most of those deaths were of adults who smoked, but 2.5 million were of nonsmokers who died because they breathed secondhand smoke—air that was polluted by other people’s cigarette smoke.

Aventura dentistLooking for more inspiration to quit? Think of your family and the negative impact that secondhand smoke can have on them. Look no further that your mirror, if you want a healthy, beautiful smile then quitting is a must!

Get That Bright Summer Smile, But Be Careful How You Do it!

Miami teeth whiteningGreat dental tips from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.

South Florida is the bright smile capital of the south, and we see our share of patients that want to go at it alone by whitening their teeth at home. Patients often ask our opinion about the best whitening toothpaste or whitening strips at the drugstore, so they can perform the whitening treatment on their own. However, there is no substitute for a professional fast in-office whitening treatment. You may find plenty of products available at the store or on-line. Some of them may actually work, but they will not achieve the amazing results that you can get with a professional in-office whitening treatment.

The problem with these over-the-counter treatments is that they typically come in one size and strength to fit all types of teeth. However, when it comes to dental work, every patient has different needs. The whitening trays and strips found at your local drugstore may provide good results on one patient’s teeth, while providing another with only a partial whitening. This may cause and uneven result. Some teeth appearing perfectly white, while others still showing stains. Sometimes the results are worse than before the treatment.

The whitening products sold in stores are not professional strength. They usually contain a small amount of whitening agent, usually around 3 percent peroxide, which may provide results for patients who have light stains on their teeth, but may not do much for tough teeth stains and discolorations. Most over-the-counter products will provide results one to two shades brighter. The whitening gel our office uses comes in a professional strength only available to dentists, with up to 35 percent peroxide strength. The gel can penetrate the enamel of your teeth, removing stubborn stains that the store-bought kits cannot touch. Our professional treatment can whiten your teeth by up to ten shades in just one visit. It is important to know that results will vary by patient.

Regular teeth whitening products you buy at your local store may help you attain a brighter smile, but you may need to use them for weeks, or even months before you see evident results.  The whitening system we use in our office usually lasts about an hour, and can produce results up to ten shades brighter in that short time.

Call our office today to make an appointment so you can find out what the best options are for your specific case.

Aventura Dentist Addresses The Question: Why Did My Teeth Change Color?

Why Did My Teeth Change Color

I keep brushing and Brushing and using the latest toothpaste to keep my teeth white, but it does not last.  Am I doing something wrong?  Brushing and flossing are everyday ways to keep your teeth bright, white and healthy. Still, if you might feel like your smile is lacking some sparkle or is more yellow than it used to be, you’re not alone. When the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry asked people what they’d most like to improve about their smile, the most common response was whiter teeth. The American Association of Orthodontists also found that nearly 90% of patients requested tooth whitening.

Thinking about teeth whitening? Get the facts first. Here are five of the most commonly asked questions about the process.

Why Did My Teeth Change Color?

Over time, your teeth can go from white to not-so-bright for a number of reasons:
  • ·         Food and Drink

Coffee, tea and red wine are some major staining culprits. What do they have in common? Intense color pigments called chromogens that attach to the white, outer part of your tooth (enamel).

  • ·         Tobacco Use

Two chemicals found in tobacco create stubborn stains: Tar and nicotine. Tar is naturally dark. Nicotine is colorless until it’s mixed with oxygen. Then, it turns into a yellowish, surface-staining substance.
  • ·         Age

Below the hard, white outer shell of your teeth (enamel) is a softer area called dentin. Over time, the outer enamel layer gets thinner with brushing and more of the yellowish dentin shows through.
  • ·         Trauma

If you’ve been hit in the mouth, your tooth may change color because it reacts to an injury by laying down more dentin, which is a darker layer under the enamel.
  • ·         Medications

Tooth darkening can be a side effect of certain antihistamines, antipsychotics and high blood pressure medications. Young children who are exposed to antibiotics like tetracycline and doxycycline when their teeth are forming (either in the womb or as a baby) may have discoloration of their adult teeth later in life. Chemotherapy and head and neck radiation can also darken teeth.

What is the best solution?

There is no right answer, however, a combination of in-office teeth whitening and at-home care seems to provide the best long-term results.

  • In-Office Bleaching

This procedure is called chairside bleaching and usually requires only one office visit. The dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect your gums. Bleach is then applied to the teeth.

  • At-Home Bleaching

Peroxide-containing whiteners actually bleach the tooth enamel. They typically come in a gel and are placed in a tray that fits on your teeth. You may also use a whitening strip that sticks to your teeth. The concentration of the bleaching agent is lower than what your dentist would use in the office.

Call our office today to make an appointment so you can find out what the best options are for your specific case.

Sleep Apnea Can be Treated by Your Dentist!

Sleep Apnea Can be Treated by Your Dentist!

Sleep apnea is a potentially dangerous disorder with fairly benign symptoms such as loud snoring at night, morning headaches or daytime bouts of sleepiness. The cause? Intermittent periods throughout sleep when you actually stop breathing.

Breathing cessation, or apnea, lasts from seconds to nearly a minute. When breathingresumes, the brain senses lack of oxygen and wakes you up. The snoring is loud, sometimes explosive.

In the morning, the build-up of carbon dioxide in the blood causes headaches. And the lack of deep, relaxing sleep can leave one drowsy and usually grouchy, during the day.

During sleep apnea, the upper air passages in the mouth and throat are obstructed; no one is sure why. One form of treatment that has proven successful is wearing an acrylic appliance during sleep to keep air passages open. It's comfortable and easy to use. Call our office to schedule an appointment for a sleep apnea appiance.

What is a Dental Sealant and Do I Really Need It?

What is a Dental Sealant?
miami dentist and dental sealants
Dental Sealants keep your teeth healthy

I'm sure you've heard people say that their dentist sealed their teeth to help prevent cavities, but what does that mean? Chances are they are probably talking about a dental sealant. A dental sealant is a clear or white, liquid-plastic material put on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The sealant bonds into the depressions and grooves (pits and fissures) of teeth and protects them from tooth decay and cavities. Although children and teens usually use sealants, adults can use them, too.

Applying a dental sealant is a relatively simple procedure. To put in a sealant, your dentist or dental hygienist will place a cotton roll around your teeth to absorb saliva and prevent moisture from getting on the teeth. A sheet of rubber (rubber dam) may be used to isolate the teeth. Then the dentist will apply the solution that will glue the sealant to the tooth. After about a minute, he or she will rinse off the excess glue, dry your teeth, and put on the sealant.

One type of sealant hardens very quickly through the use of a bright light. The other hardens more gradually. Sealants may wear down over a period of years. Your dentist should check them regularly and reapply them if needed. Overall, dental sealants are a good way to ensure your teeth are protected from decay and cavities.
