Is There A Vaccine Against Cavities?

Cutting-edge dental news from Miami Dentist , Dr. Carroll.
miami dentist

Could Dental Cavities Be a Thing of the Past? Dental cavities are a global epidemic. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) among industrialized nations, 60 to 90 percent of school children and most adults have cavities. Here in the United States, dental caries, the disease which leads to cavities, is the most common childhood disease, nearly 5 times more common than asthma. Fortunately, the latest dental research shows help may be on the way. Researchers at The Forsyth Institute have made significant advances in research to develop a vaccine against cavities. The research team has discovered key molecules that can stimulate a human immune response attack cavities at their source.

You are still a few years away from seeing a vaccine on the market, but research is moving fast. The vaccine may inhibit the enzyme that allows bacteria to accumulate on your teeth, making dental cavities a thing of the past. Bad news for adults: Since bacteria have already begun to accumulate on your teeth, chances are the vaccine would have little impact on your oral health as an adult. However, in the future if children are vaccinated around the age of 1, it could give them cavity-free future. Around this age their immune systems are strong enough handle the vaccine, yet the probability that bacteria have begun to accumulate is low.

While a vaccine against dental cavities could reduce the number of cavities for future generations, it would not replace proper dental care, such as regular brushing, flossing and dental check-ups and cleanings.

Miami Dentist Answers Top Patients Questions: Are Dentures a good option for me?

Miami dental implants
Are dentures a good option?
Are Dentures a good option for me? I often get get this question from my patients. Let's first review
what what dentures are and their positives and negatives! Dentures are removable appliances that can replace missing teeth and help restore your smile. If you’ve lost all of your natural teeth, whether from gum disease, tooth decay or injury, replacing missing teeth will benefit your appearance and your health. That’s because dentures make it easier to eat and speak better than you could without teeth—things that people often take for granted.

When you lose all of your teeth, facial muscles can sag, making you look older. Dentures can help fill out the appearance of your face and profile. They can be made to closely resemble your natural teeth so that your appearance does not change much. Dentures may even improve the look of your smile.

Types of dentures:

  • Conventional. This full removable denture is made and placed in your mouth after the remaining teeth are removed and tissues have healed, which may take several months.
  • Immediate. This removable denture is inserted on the same day that the remaining teeth are removed. Your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw during a preliminary visit. You don’t have to be without teeth during the healing period, but may need to have the denture relined or remade after your jaw has healed.
  • Overdenture. Sometimes some of your teeth can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too.
New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. It is not unusual to experience minor irritation or soreness. You may find that saliva flow temporarily increases. As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems should go away. Follow-up appointments with the dentist are generally needed after a denture is inserted so the fit can be checked and adjusted. If any problem persists, particularly irritation or soreness, be sure to consult your dentist.
Even if you wear full dentures, you still have to practice good dental hygiene. Brush your gums, tongue and roof of your mouth every morning with a soft-bristled brush before you insert your dentures to stimulate circulation in your tissues and help remove plaque.
The negative aspects of dentures are that they:
  • Are often uncomfortable
  • Require adhesive
  • put pressure on your gums
  • often make you feel old.
  • may have to be adjusted often
  • can cause bone re absorption due to pressure on the gum and underlying structures
The good news is that there are other alternatives. New advances in dentistry allow us to replace one or more missing teeth with dental implants. We can often replace a full arch or a full mouth of teeth with dental implants. The restorations on the dental implants can be non-removable and be highly esthetic. In fact, dental implants con often look better than your natural teeth and require minimal maintenance. Dental implants are a superior restoration option to dentures and partials.

Call our office to find out more about dental implants and to see if you a good candidate.

Aventura Dentist Gives Great Tips for Healthier Looking Lips

miami dentist
Aventura Dentist

You see them in just about every Hollywood movie. Yes, beautiful, soft lips. They are desired by women everywhere and pursued by men. You see them everywhere, featured on magazine covers, in lipstick ads, billboards, online. Now you can have them, too? Here are some ways to plump up, beautify, and protect your lips.

READ PRODUCT LABELS
Can't get enough lip balm? If so, check the ingredients you’re putting on your lips. To protect from sun damage, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing a lip balm with an SPF of 30 or higher. "Avoid parabens and fragrance, which can be irritating," says Ranella Hirsch, MD, a Boston dermatologist. Also, if you tend to get chapped lips, you may need to avoid camphor and menthol, super-aromatic ingredients that can dry your lips. Instead, look for ingredients that help lips hold on to moisture. These include glycerin, mineral oil, aloe, lactic acid, and sorbitol. Lanolin and beeswax both soften lips instantly. However, beeswax does not penetrate the surface of the lip.

SKIP THE ARTIFICIAL STUFF
Skip lip balms with artificial flavors and sweeteners; they can cause an allergic reaction and often dry lips more.

AVOID LICKING YOUR LIPS TOO MUCH
Licking your lips feels great. It cools them down -- but it also makes your problem much worse. Your saliva evaporates quickly, leaving them drier than before, and the enzymes that help your saliva clean your mouth and digest food are much too harsh for your lips.

EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE
Did you know that your lips can benefit from this treatment, too? Apply a dab of sugar and honey (it helps the sugar stick) to your lips and rub gently, using small circular motions.
"Turning over those epidermal cells can help stimulate new collagen, which somewhat slows down the aging process of the lips," says Neil Sadick, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. Finish by wiping your mouth with a damp cloth and applying lip balm.

AVOID OPEN MOUTH BREATHING
Avoid breathing with an open mouth. It's bad, and not just because it looks uncouth. Think of all the air being sucked and blown constantly over your poor lips as you gasp and pant, sapping moisture with every breath. Inhaling and exhaling through your nose will stop that harmful, desert-dry airflow.

Our mouths need just as much care as the rest of our skin -- if not more. Your lips are dependent on a steady intake of vitamins and minerals, so stick to healthy, nutrient-dense foods like fresh fruits and vegetables. Vitamins B and E are especially important for healthy lips and skin.

North Miami Prosthodontist Explains What a Root Canal is and Why Patients need One?

North Miami Prosthodontist

Sometimes a cavity is just too deep to be fixed and may require a root canal. Root canal procedures are used to treat problems of the tooth's soft core, otherwise known as dental pulp. The pulp contains the blood vessels and the nerves of the tooth, which run like a thread down into the root. The pulp tissue can die when it’s infected or injured. If you don't remove it, your tooth gets infected and you could lose it. During a root canal treatment, the dentist removes the pulp, and the root canal is cleaned and sealed off to protect it. Your dentist may then place a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger and protect it.

North Miami Dentist, Dr. Carroll, on The Healthy Side of Cherries

Dental Advice from North Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll
miami prosthodontist and healthy foods

Miami is known for hot summers! Many people love summer. I know I do. It is the hottest season and is marked by the longest day of the year, plenty of sunshine, vacation time and fireflies. But did you know that summer is also the time of year to enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables that are in peak season and can actually boost your dental health. Summer is the perfect season for eating great food full of vitamins and nutrients that are perfect for promoting dental health. Cherries are great….add them to your diet this summer and boost your dental health.

Cherries

Cherries a fleshy stone fruit; the red flesh is delicious but the pits can be poisonous if consumed in excess. Miami Dentist, Dr. Carroll, encourages spitting the seeds out to avoid implications and then feasting on the fresh fruit when in season to reap the nutritional rewards in the food.

Cherries get their red hue from anthocyanins which is a compound that can minimize pain, inflammation (a leading symptom of gingivitis), reduce cancer, diabetes and heart disease. The fruit is rich in Vitamin A (that promotes promotes normal growth body cell growth), vitamins C, E, potassium, magnesium, iron, folate and fiber.

The time to get the best selection and values on summer foods is when the items are in season. While the foods can certainly perk up a picnic, individuals will still need to do more to ensure dental health.

Improve Your Smile with Dental Veneers with Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll

Improve Your Smile with Veneers with Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll

Check out the difference that dental veneers can make.

If you're looking for a more perfect smile, then you might want to consider veneers. Popular among movie stars and other celebrities, veneers let you change the appearance of your teeth as dramatically as you want. Veneers let you brighten your teeth and straighten your smile - you can even change the size and shape of your teeth. Veneers can be either composite or porcelain. The veneer is actually a thin piece of porcelain or composite material about the size of a fingernail. Once the custom-made veneer is bonded onto the tooth, it becomes extremely strong. It also blends in with the remaining tooth structure so that it is unnoticeable to the naked-eye. Once in place, it looks, feels, and functions just like a regular tooth.

Veneers are a popular choice for total smile makeovers, letting a dentist change not just the color but also the size, shape, and straightness of your teeth. Veneers are often used for the same reasons as bonding - to lighten stains, close gaps and even alter crooked or malformed teeth. Both can be utilized to change the shape or color of a single tooth or if necessary to revamp the entire smile. Veneers are generally more durable and stain resistant than bonding.

If you have any questions about veneers, or if you're interested in a cosmetic
consultation, please call our office at 305-948-9102 or visit our website at www.CarrollDentistry.com

Kids' Bad Dental Habits and How to Break Them - North Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll

Kids' Bad Dental Habits (and How to Break Them!)
They suck their thumbs and wipe their noses on their sleeves. Let's face it - kids have a lot of bad habits. While some of these habits amount to little more than lack of social grace, others can lead to more serious health problems. A few can even result in severe dental problems.

Here are three of the most serious habits leading to dental problems in children!

Thumb and Pacifier Sucking

Sure, it isn't attractive when your little one sucks his or her thumb, but that's not the only issue. In addition to spreading all kinds of germs, the practice can leave your child vulnerable to serious dental problems. Chronic thumb and pacifier sucking could cause the child to have buck teeth, which could require future orthodontic treatment. Most children will stop this habit on their own between ages 2 and 4, but there's no guarantee. Try to intervene early on. If all else fails, there are certain topical products that leave a bitter taste in the child's mouth, dissuading the behavior.

Going to Bed with a Bottle

So often we imagine babies snuggled up in a crib, clinging to stuffed animals and a bottle. Like thumb sucking, some children tend to suck the bottle while asleep, leading to the same
orthodontic issues listed above. What's more, putting any liquid apart from water in the bottle allows tooth- and gum-destroying bacteria to rest in the mouth for extended periods of time. Even infants are susceptible to tooth decay. Your best bet is to skip the bottle altogether. If that isn't possible, dilute the liquid a bit more each night with water until nothing else remains.

Swallowing Toothpaste
Toothpaste manufacturers have gone to great lengths to provide consumers with a product that not only fights plaque and gum disease, but also tastes great - sometimes a little too great. Children, particularly young children, are prone to swallowing toothpaste when brushing. It's often the result of using too much toothpaste. The problem? Too much fluoride is ingested into the child's body, causing a condition known as fluorosis. In severe cases, fluorosis leads to white or brown spots on the teeth. This bad habit is actually fairly easy to break. Try explaining to the child that a pea-sized drop of toothpaste is adequate, then teach them how to brush, rinse and spit like a pro.

Understanding and breaking bad kids' habits early will help you and your child establish a good oral hygiene regimen. If you have questions about how to properly care for your child's teeth, or if you think your child's bad dental habits have resulted in decay, schedule an appointment with our office by calling (305) 948-9102  or visiting our website www.CarrollDentistry.com today. We'll take good care of both of you!

Are Your Teeth Temperamental? Dealing with Sensitive Smiles - Advice from Miami Dentist Dr. Carroll

Are you overly sensitive? Relax, I don't mean crying during life insurance commercials; I'm talking about your smile. Millions of adults struggle with hypersensitive teeth, meaning they are sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, very sugary or acidic foods and drinks and vigorous tooth brushing. This kind of sensitivity is often called "dentin
hypersensitivity."

Dentin is the tissue that makes up the core of each tooth. Above the gum line, dentin is protected with a coating of enamel. Unfortunately, as enamel is worn away or decayed, dentin becomes exposed and receptive to sensations that cause painful nerve responses. This can also occur as the result of receding gums, a common symptom of
gum disease.

So, what causes sensitive teeth? A number of things may be to blame. Over-zealous brushing with a firm bristled tooth brush or abrasive toothpaste can lead to dentin hypersensitivity, as can gum disease, which is the result of poor brushing and flossing habits. Your diet may also play a role, as frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks can chemically dissolve tooth enamel. Finally, abnormal wear on tooth surfaces from chronic clenching or grinding of teeth, nail biting and chewing on hard objects can lead to sensitive teeth.

If you're already suffering from overly sensitive teeth, there are products that can help. Toothpaste designed for those with sensitive teeth can reduce the pain associated with the condition after only a few days of use. Also, be sure to stick with a soft-bristled toothbrush - hard toothbrushes will only exacerbate the problem. Brush and floss daily to maintain healthy gums and protect dentin from exposure.
