It sounds crazy, but it is certainly possible. Children are extremely vulnerable to the ill effects of secondhand smoke.Researchers have discovered one more reason to not smoke, especially around kids: A recent study found that children exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke had double the risk of getting cavities.

The
study looked at the health records of nearly 77,000 Japanese children,
ranging from newborns to 3-year-olds. The researchers found that
children exposed to tobacco smoke at 4 months old had almost twice the
risk of getting cavities in their baby teeth. Exposure to secondhand smoke can be measured by the level of cotinine in the body. Cotinine is a by-product of nicotine, which is found in tobacco. Children who live in homes where smoking is allowed have higher cotinine levels than children who live in smoke-free homes. The researchers also found that children who lived with family members who smoked had significantly more decayed, missing, or filled teeth. Miami prosthodontist Scientists also found differences in the oral health practices of children exposed to secondhand smoke compared with children who were not. For instance, the kids exposed to tobacco smoke were less likely to regularly brush their teeth. They were also more likely to drink juice, which can decay teeth. Aventura Dentist Secondhand smoke affects children’s teeth Please remember that with studies like this that correlation does not necessarily mean causation, and the study’s authors even concluded that it is impossible to determine whether secondhand smoke exposure caused the increase in cavities. Miami prosthodontist However, there is plenty of research that has linked secondhand smoke exposure to getting cavities in baby and permanent teeth. And when an estimated 40% of children around the world are exposed to secondhand smoke, it would be unwise to not consider the risks of smoking around kids. For example, when children are exposed to secondhand smoke, they have less of an antibody called IgA in their saliva and more sialic acid levels. IgA helps protect children and adults from cavities, whereas sialic acid leads to plaque and cavities. Secondhand smoke can lead to oral health (and overall health) problems by also causing
· oral inflammation, decrease in vitamin C levels, and dysfunction of the immune system

Aventura Dentist DIscusses Materials Used for Dental Crowns and Their Advantages
Crowns are needed when decay and dental work have eroded too much of the tooth's structure to allow for a simple filling. In these cases, restoration requires a technique like crowns, which attach to the remaining tooth, stand up under heavier use and meet cosmetic requirements.
Aventura Dentist
Crowns strengthen and restore the entire top of a tooth. The crown can also be part of the attachment of a fixed bridge for the replacement of teeth. The tooth is strengthened because it is covered from the outside with a casting of metal or ceramic that wraps and splints the tooth.
Crowns are most often made of gold or porcelain. Crowns also can be made of stainless steel, but those crowns are often temporary and not designed for long-term wear.

Porcelain crowns usually are built on a metal base that fits snugly over the natural tooth. Your dentist will choose a porcelain that matches the color of your natural teeth.
Porcelain crowns are generally so carefully matched in color that they cannot be distinguished from your natural teeth. Many people choose porcelain crowns for the cosmetic appearance and the confidence it gives them.
New materials are now available that, in some cases, allow the use of all-ceramic crowns. These have a beautiful lifelike appearance. Short-term studies support their success, and long-term trials are ongoing.
Crowns also can be made of gold. Though a few people prefer gold crowns, some people prefer not to use gold because it stands out from the other teeth in appearance. At the same time, if the crown is on a back molar, some people feel the cosmetic issue is not a big one. Your dentist will discuss the types of materials available if a crown is recommended.

Miami Prosthodontist on Dental Plaque: Some Dental Problems Are Easy to See!
You've seen it on many people when they smile. One of the easiest problems to spot is a build-up of plaque. Plaque is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria, which is constantly forming on the teeth. Usually it is invisible to the naked eye, but when a person is not brushing adequately, it can build up to where it appears to be a thick whitish coating on the teeth at the gum line. If not removed, it can lead to gum disease.
Aventura dentist
Another potential problem, which is easy to spot, is missing teeth. Many patients assume that if they are still able to eat, they are O.K. But very often, losing just one tooth can lead to the loss of support, and teeth begin to drift into the empty space, causing a change in the bite. It also forces the remaining teeth to carry an additional load, sometimes past their ability to adapt. In most cases, when even one tooth is lost, the remaining teeth suffer and are more likely to be lost as well.
Aventura Dentist
Dealing with these dental problems requires time and attention and our office wants to help you deal with these dental problems. In fact we want to help you prevent dental problems. A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental staff to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions. We offer a wide variety of dental services including: Dental implants, Lumineers, porcelain crowns, Invisalign, and teeth whitening to help you achieve a healthy smile.
